Ligasure Atlas, Maryland, Impact & Mini l Instruments in surgery l Energy source in surgery

The Ligasure device is an advanced surgical instrument that uses a combination of Bipolar energy and mechanical compression to seal blood vessels and tissue during surgical procedures. It is commonly used in both open and laparoscopic surgeries to achieve hemostasis (control bleeding) and tissue dissection. The principle of operation of the Ligasure device can be summarized as follows:

Electrical Energy Delivery: The Ligasure device utilizes radiofrequency electrical energy to coagulate tissue and seal blood vessels by being a bipolar energy source. When activated, the device delivers controlled energy to the target tissue which is in between the jaws with minimal lateral thermal spread.

Tissue Compression: The Ligasure device includes a pair of jaws or electrodes that are applied to the tissue being treated. These jaws gently compress the tissue to create a secure seal around blood vessels or other tissue structures.

Heating and Thermal Energy: As the jaws of the Ligasure device compress the tissue, radiofrequency energy is transmitted to the tissue. This causes the tissue to heat up, leading to thermal coagulation.

Vessel Sealing: The combination of pressure and thermal energy causes the collagen in the blood vessel walls to denature and fuse together. This fusion effectively seals the blood vessels, preventing bleeding.

Division or Dissection: In addition to vessel sealing, the Ligasure device can also be used for tissue division or dissection. Once the blood vessels are sealed, the device can be used to cut or dissect the tissue along the sealed line.

Hemostasis and Tissue Sealing: By sealing blood vessels and providing effective hemostasis, the Ligasure device reduces the need for conventional surgical techniques such as tying off vessels with sutures or applying clips. It allows for faster and more efficient surgery by minimizing blood loss and improving overall surgical precision.

The Ligasure device offers several advantages, including reduced operating time, improved surgical outcomes, and enhanced patient recovery. However, it's important to note that the Ligasure device should be used by trained healthcare professionals who are familiar with its proper usage and safety guidelines.
