Cholecystectomy or gall bladder removal is the most common surgery performed by all surgeons and hence, we need to be aware of postcholecystectomy syndrome and its management.
For the patients, it is important that they get symptomatic relief after surgery and their most common issue is pain after gall bladder surgery. We, as surgeons need to be aware of the causes and risk factors of postcholecystectomy syndrome so as to identify if the patient has it or is it only a psychological issue.
As highlighted in the video, this problem is seen in nearly one-third of the patients who undergo cholecystectomy, and hence it is something that needs a good discussion with the patients and their families before surgery. Just like all other disorders, prevention is better than cure for this entity as well. Hence, performing a safe laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the key to prevent PCS.
The first point is to be aware of whether the patient has gallstone pain preoperatively. Next is to have a discussion where the patients are aware of the side effects of gallbladder removal surgery. The patients need to be aware of how they can manage abdominal pain and gas after laparoscopic surgery.
Next is to be aware of the different etiology classes that can cause post-cholecystectomy syndrome and identify its symptoms and signs. The key here is to "Not ignore any symptoms that the patient reports".
So, let us have a look at the causes, risk factors and the different diagnostic modalities to assess these patients and manage them well.
