Chemoport insertion can be performed without general anesthesia and this video highlights our technique in a step by step fashion in our Edusurg Clinics step by step surgery series.
The first step is to explain to the patient the need for chemoport and its post-procedure care followed by
- Ultrasound to mark the anatomical structures especially the compressibility of the internal jugular vein to confirm the anatomy.
- Then, the port is prepared and puncture is taken under sonographic guidance. After this, the guidewire is inserted and position confirmed under C-arm.
- Then, the port chamber is prepared and port anchored with stitches.
- Then tunnel is created and after marking the tube length the tube is inserted over dilator into the internal jugular vein.
The position is confirmed with a C-arm shoot as well as the backflow of blood into the syringe.
This is one of the commonest procedures required for chemotherapy administration and is routinely performed for these patients.
