First Port Placement - Port Placement In Minimally Invasive Surgery - Laparoscopic Surgery Steps

Hello everyone !! This was a viewer's demand who wished to see our first port technique. So, here is our technique in the video and its scientific basis based on umbilical anatomy.

First port placement during laparoscopy is one of the trickiest steps in the surgery. As they say, well begun is half done. And in surgery, the key is to begin safely and carry out the surgery safely. Minimally invasive surgery has its own challenges and the key is patience and sound technique.

The open technique that is described here is by no means the only technique of first port placement. However, with more than a decade of experience in laparoscopy, the team in the video demonstrates their personally favored technique which has been used and has been safe across hundreds of cases.

The technique relies on the anatomy of the umbilicus and this is described in brief in beginning followed by the mechanical basis and rationale behind adopting this technique.

The key point as highlighted in the video also is to "LIFT THE ABDOMINAL WALL" at all times.

A modification, in the end, is sometimes we take a suture to fix the port to the sheath and this suture can be tied to close the sheath in the end thereby making the port closure easy as well as this prevents the port from slipping in and out during the surgery. We will incorporate that in upcoming videos if we take that suture in some cases.

Once again, I would like to thank you all for coming up with such interesting topics. Keep communicating and make this your forum.
