Laparoscopic Appendicectomy - Step By Step Surgery

Laparoscopic appendicectomy is one of the most commonly performed surgery at the general surgery level and it is also one of the most commonly asked surgeries in exams. Also, acute appendicitis is very common, and laparoscopic management is the gold standard in present times.

This video highlights one of the techniques of performing laparoscopic appendicectomy with 3 mm ports and this surgery has been performed by Dr. Rajvilas Narkhede, Consultant gastrointestinal and HPB surgeon at Alexis hospital, Nagpur, Maharashtra. One of the important steps is the port placement location and this has been shown in this video diagrammatically.

The step by step surgery has been appreciated by a lot of our colleagues and we strive to keep editing and uploading new surgeries routinely.

Appendicectomy was also a viewer's choice and hence, here is the video.

As far as BASE MANAGEMENT is concerned

- 2 endoloops and dividing in between is the most satisfactory technique

- Dr. Rajvilas's technique of using only one endoloop is just because after doing so many cases, we know that contamination after the end is cut is minimal.

However, the textbook technique is 2 endoloops and cut in between or one endoloop followed by clips at both ends and then cut in between the clips.

Also, you may secure the base with endo-suturing as shown here if you have the expertise and if there is space for suturing. Hope this video gives you an orientation for the steps of laparoscopic appendicectomy @Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES)
